Know Your Risk For Heart Disease

What is the Lp-PLA2 Activity test?

The Lp-PLA2 Activity test measures the activity (or actions) of Lp-PLA2 in the bloodstream. Lp-PLA2 is an enzyme that can assess the amount of inflammation in your arteries due to a build-up of cholesterol.

Why Should You Get an Lp-PLA2 Activity Test?

When LDL (“bad” cholesterol) gets into the artery wall, the body produces more Lp-PLA2. Unfortunately, Lp-PLA2 can worsen inflammation and promote plaque formation, which not only increases cholesterol but also makes the cap over the plaque thinner. A thinner cap is more likely to rupture and cause a blood clot, potentially leading to a heart attack or stroke. By checking Lp-PLA2 activity, your provider can determine whether you have active plaque growth at risk for rupture.

When should the Lp-PLA2 Activity test be performed?

The Lp-PLA2 Activity test can be performed at the same time your medical provider runs other tests, such as a cholesterol test, to determine if you are at increased risk for heart disease or stroke. The Lp-PLA2 Activity test is recommended if you have two or more risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or obesity.

Preparing for the Test

No special preparation is required. You don’t have to fast and you can continue taking your medications as usual.

How to Lower Lp-PLA2 Activity Levels

  • Eat a heart-healthy diet with more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and less fat.

  • Exercise regularly.

  • Quit smoking and ask for support if needed.

  • Take care of your dental health, since gum disease contributes to heart disease.

  • Talk to your provider about medications or supplements that can help reduce Lp-PLA2 activity.

By monitoring and lowering your Lp-PLA2 activity, you can actively reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Do you have a family history of heart disease?
